Touchable Sculpture - "These vibrantly colored, smooth and gleaming pieces beg to be touched and stroked. The maquettes vary in shape and hue but each has a hard cool surface that you could lean on or hide behind. They draw you toward them. Poised on their wooden bases, they look as if they’ll begin to revolve and grow as you move around them. And you can turn the pieces, since the artist has placed a metal plate with mounted bearings under each one.
Boro’s full-scale outdoor sculptures can be seen on the grounds of his studio in Old Lyme, Connecticut. His studio and grounds are open to the public. Entering these grounds is like entering a grove of beech trees. The sculptures spread above and around you as you walk underneath and through their forms. This is the key to experiencing Boro’s work. You relate to it as you would to a tree you could rest under or climb. The branches weave and fold around each other, and you become part of their shape.
This quality suggests something unique about Boro’s sculpture: the artist includes the viewer in the work. No longer a detached observer, you feel like a child again, wanting to climb and stroke and remain inside the forms. And you are calm. These strong, open, touchable structures are protective but never constricting." Jason E. Boro, Art Critic
